Prior to European colonization, our region served the Native American community as a rich fishing ground, a tradition which carries into the present day. Early colonial settlers sought land near Lockwood's Folly River—Benjamin Holden, for whom our beach town is named, was largely responsible for much of the town’s development and growth. In 1924, Holden’s grandson founded a commercial fishery on the island and began plans for the Holden Beach Bridge, Holden Beach Resort and lobbied for the institution of public ferry service to the island.

The strong, vibrant community of our island stems directly from these institutions. One of the five unique Brunswick Islands, Holden Beach, facing due south, affords residents unprecedented beauty in that the beach runs east-west. On Holden Beach, the sun both rises and sets over the sparkling Atlantic.
