Oak Island North Carolina
Oak Island, NC
Welcome to Oak Island, Brunswick County’s big town with small-town charm!
Oak Island is one of the Brunswick barrier islands of North Carolina’s southernmost coast. Oak Island’s coasts span nearly 15 miles of uninterrupted, pristine beach dunes, making our town the largest of the Brunswick Islands—but don’t let that fool you; our residents pride themselves on the town’s intimate, small-town sensibilities!
Used prior to colonial times by Native Americans as a rich fishing ground, Oak Island only became a true island upon the deepening of the Elizabeth River during construction of the Intracoastal Waterway. The construction of Fort Caswell in the 1830’s brought military presence to the area; Confederate Civil War occupations and World War II activity off the coast have made our area a treasure trove for history buffs.
Fort Caswell Oak Island Lighthouse, North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport, Museum of Coastal Carolina, the ruins of colonial Brunswick Town, Fort Anderson Historic Site, Smith Island Museum, Bald Head Island Lighthouse, Old Brunswick County Jail Museum, the Battleship North Carolina, Fort Johnston and the numerous regional historic Civil War sites are all sites of historic interest that Oak Island visitors and residents will not want to miss!
The island itself is home to two individual towns, Oak Island and Caswell Beach. Four designated, municipally maintained beaches, with over 50 public beach access points, grace our communities: Caswell, Oak Island, Yaupon and Long Beach. In 1955, both Yaupon and Long Beaches were incorporated, and in 1999 these communities were consolidated to form the Town of Oak Island. Oak Island’s natural beauty is remarkable, even along North Carolina’s endless strand of stunning coastline. The unique “scalloped arcs” of our coastline face south, not east; thus, our residents enjoy both sunrise over the lighthouse and sunset down at the point.
Our community prides itself on its ecological awareness, regarding our communities of nesting loggerhead sea turtles as fellow “neighbors”. We invite you to come visit your sea-bound neighbors at our beaches, parks and nature centers—where landlubbers, too, are privy to a variety of facilities, services and amenities.
Loggerhead Sea Turtle Sanctuary at Oak Island and nearby Holden Beach, Oak Island Skate Park, Cape Fear Yacht Club, Shallotte Park dog run, Southport Pier & Riverwalk, Tidalwaves Canoe Dock and the Oak Island Nature and Ocean Education Centers are just a few of the numerous attractions to learn, relax and play on Oak Island.
Swimming, sunbathing, kite flying, sand gliding, fishing, surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, kite-boarding, canoeing, hang-gliding, beachcombing, camping—whatever your pleasure, you’ll find it on Oak Island. Our area offers shopping, art galleries, fine dining restaurants, local wineries and incomparable Brunswick Island seafood. Guests find the convenience of modern comforts but the ability to steep their experience in time-honored tradition. Saint James Plantation, Sunset Harbor, Pinners Point, Kings Lynn, South Harbor Village, Arbor Creek, Turtlecreek, Tranquil Harbor and Ocean Greens are local communities and subdivisions where many Oak Island residents—seasonal and year round—enjoy civic events, golf, leisure, clubs and cultural performances—all within walking distance of the beach.
Visit us for the white sandy shores, painted sunrises and our “endless summer” of nearly year-round sunshine. While you’re here, discover the small-town charm, community pride, ecological wonders and hospitality that make up the backbone of our town and its residents. Find your dream come true, under majestic live oaks or yaupon trees, next to the quiet surf of your home on Oak Island!
